A New species of Nepenthes

ALASTAIR S. ROBINSON et al has discovered a new highland species from the Phillippines. They have named it after Sir David Attenborough, who is incidentally, one of my favourite TV icon and naturalist. Needless to say , N. attenboroughii is rare and highly endangered, and probably even more so now that its habitat has been published ....

What a fascinating find - and named after a great man.

Nepenthes are fascinating, beautiful to find a new one. Sir David has given us a lot of pleasure and knowledge with his more than great nature series. He certainly deserves to have his name associated with such a rare plant.

One of the few high elevation pitcher plants, this one is said to be able to devour even a rat. As far as the name is concerned, it should be named after the Philippine president Gloria Arroyo. Considering the fact that more than a quarter of Filipinos must survive below their 4USD a day earning, Gloria averages 18,000 USD every dinner. That's gluttony!

well, don't you believe it.

Here's what one of the discoverer Alastair Robinson said "somewhere along the line, somebody must have said that it is large enough to eat a rat, and being prone to hyperbole, the papers ran with that sensationalist idea and made it "fact". It's rubbish;"

by the way, the picture in the western press is another species .... N. northiana. What a hoax !
